Tonight, I Burn by Katherine J Adams - a magical rebellion and a dangerous romance

A world on the brink of chaos, where witches walk the veil between life and death by burning at the stake each night.

When Penny's favourite sister doesn't return from Death, Penny breaks the rules. Determined to find her sister, Penny makes a deal with the devastating Lord Malin who she meets in Death. Someone who shouldn't be there at all. This bargain leads her to Alice, a mysterious captive prophet, and to a rebellion against the High Warden brewing in the shadows of their city.

The magic system that Katherine J Adams has created is fascinating; the concept of burning alive was uncomfortable to read, but the cross-over scenes into death were beautifully detailed.

"Together, we are light and dark. Life and death. And together, we might survive him."

Vividly written with exceptional worldbuilding, Tonight, I Burn is the first instalment in a planned trilogy, setting the stage for an epic series. The intricate plots and intermingling of covens, combined with magic, mystery, and romance, make this a compelling read.

I enjoyed reading Penny's development as she grew into herself, although some of her actions were incredibly frustrating. That said, I know her character arc has to span three books, so I'll give her some grace! I also liked the evilness of some of the characters and the morally grey of others.

While I am a fan of Why Choose romance, I appreciated the polyamory of this story - it was beautifully presented and I can't wait to see how the relationship/s progress. I do think the last few chapters raced too quickly, but it's just made me even more anxious for Tonight, I Bleed.
